In the past the following have been the most frequently asked questions and are not in any particular order. Please feel free to contact Mr.Syverson at Dixon or at syversob@elmbrookschools.org for additional information or if you have other questions.
Where do I go to obtain a musical instrument?
There are several reputable music vendors in the vicinity of the School District of Elmbrook. A guideline in selecting a vendor is whether or not a repair facility is on site. Initially parents should consider renting an instrument with any damage insurance offered by the music store.
Purchasing instruments online may offer good prices but quality and ability to maintain/repair an instrument soon become issues.
How long are small group lessons?
Small group lessons are once a week for 30 minutes
When are small group lessons given?
Band students receive lessons during the school day. The lesson is always on the same day of the week but rotates throughout the day.
When are band rehearsals scheduled?
Band rehearsals are normally scheduled during lunch and recess.
How long are band rehearsals?
Band rehearsals are held twice a week for 30 minutes.
How many concerts are there every year?
The Dixon Elementary 5th grade band has two concerts every year, a winter concert and a spring concert. The 4th grade band performs in the spring concert.
What should students wear when performing in a band concert?
Students should wear "nice" clothes that they feel are appropriate for performing in public. Shorts or extremely short skirts are not encouraged.
How long should my child practice?
The short answer is 20 minutes a day. The long answer is that the elementary student is very dependent upon the parent's schedule, which makes a practice requirement difficult to administer. What is most important is not "how long" a student practices but rather "how often".
How is music selected?
Music is selected for educational value only. Additional information regarding music selection for educational purposes can be found at the following website: http://www.menc.org/publication/books/relig0.html
