Formal instrumental music instruction is provided in small groups beginning in grade four for students enrolled in band or orchestra. Beginning instrumental students are allowed to participate in either band or orchestra. All band and orchestra students will receive one 30-minute small group instruction session per week. Two 30-minute rehearsals are held weekly for band and orchestra. Grade 4 beginning band and orchestra rehearsals commence by the beginning of the second semester.

The following is a recommended instrumentation for an average beginning band of thirty-five students. This is to be used as a guide.
