Board of Education Candidate Forum on Cable Channel

Two seats are up for election on April 3 for the Elmbrook Schools Board of Education. Candidates for the At-large seat are Meg Wartman (Incumbent) and Lynne Thomas. Candidates for the Area IV seat are Jean Lambert (Incumbent) and Paul Byrne. Each Board member represents the entire school district; therefore residents should select one candidate for each seat. Board members serve three-year terms.The Elmbrook Parent Leadership Council (EPLC) held a Candidate Forum on March 22. at the Elmbrook Schools Central Administrative Office, 13780 Hope Street, Brookfield. The forum will be played on the district's Time Warner Cable channels 13 & 96 daily at 7 a.m., 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. up until the election. Elmbrook Announces Two 2012 Herb Kohl Foundation Excellence Scholars

The selection committee for the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship Program has announced recipients of the 2012 Herb Kohl Foundation awards for students and teachers. Kathleen Browne and Jennifer Vosters, both students at Brookfield East, will be awarded Excellence Scholarships in the amount of $1,000.

Recipients have demonstrated excellence in the academic arena and high motivation to achieve, have displayed a broad range of activity and leadership outside the academic setting, and have shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond. They are selected by a statewide committee composed of civic leaders, and representatives of education-related associations and the program’s co-sponsors: The Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools (WCRIS), and regional Cooperative Educational Service Agencies (CESA). Browne and Vosters are among 22 Excellence Scholarship recipients this year from CESA 1.They will be honored with other recipients at a luncheon on March 31. Summer School Registration by Mail March 10-30

​Summer School brochures and registration materials are now available at www.elmbrookschools.org/summerschool. Registration is by mail only and materials must be postmarked between the dates of March 10 and March 30, 2012.

Elmbrook Summer School will begin on Monday, June 18, 2012. The K-8 session will be held at Pilgrim Park Middle School and runs through July 13, with no student attendance on July 4. The High School session will be held at Brookfield East High School and runs through July 20.

Brookfield Central & East to Receive ACT Red Quill Legacy Award

Brookfield Central and East High Schools have been selected for ACT’s 2011 Red Quill Legacy Award. This is the first year for this recognition of excellence by the ACT Midwest Region and is presented to institutions that have consistently taken a leadership role in the use of ACT programs and services for the benefit of their students and community. Schools honored are being recognized for best practices in the application and analysis of data to promote college and workplace readiness. To be considered for the Legacy designation, a school or district must demonstrate a long-term commitment to increased student achievement through effective use of EXPLORE, PLAN, and ACT data and must have received the Red Quill in multiple years. Brookfield Central and East are among only five high schools in Wisconsin receiving the Legacy award. In 2011, Central and East both achieved their highest-ever ACT composite scores, 25.0 and 25.3 respectively.

Elmbrook Announces Four Presidential Scholar Candidates

The School District of Elmbrook is proud to announce that four members of the Class of 2012 have been named candidates in the 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Brookfield East High School candidates are Aditya Trivedi, Advik Shreekumar, and Chang Ge. Brookfield Central High School has one candidate, Dee Luo. Elmbrook’s four candidates are among 10 candidates in Waukesha County, 48 in Wisconsin and 3,000 total chosen from more than 3.2 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in 2012. Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 48th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities. Further consideration is based on students’ essays, self-assessments, descriptions of activities, school recommendations, and school transcripts. Semifinalists will be announced in April and final Presidential Scholars in May. For the last two years, Brookfield Central has had two Presidential Scholars – Haley Adams (Class of 2011) and Bryan Dongre (Class of 2010).
