Poetry Out Loud

Congratulations to Abby Fuchs, 1st place and Mia Wedel, second place winners of BC's Poetry Out Loud competition. Poetry Out Loud , now in its 10th year at Brookfield Central, encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation.

The program, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. POL begins for BC students when they independently prepare for the school wide competiiton. If they win, they move on to regional, state and ultimately the National competition in Washington D.C.

BC has had two student represent Wisconsin at Nationals: Madeline Bunke (2010) and Kirsten Meier (2016) Winners at the state level receives $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip with an adult chaperone to Washington, DC, to compete for the national championship. The state winner's school receives a $500 stipend. The first runner-up in each state receives $100, with $200 for his or her school. At the National Finals there is $50,000 total in cash and school stipends with a $20,000 award for the Poetry Out Loud National Champion. Abby and Mia will be representing BC at the Wilson Center on February 13th at 7:00 in the regional competition. The event is free and open to the public.
