Burleigh Families Celebrating Learning

All are welcome on Wednesday,  April 24th between 5:00pm and 6:30pm for a gallery walk of student displays and interactive activities.  Enjoy the Play 60 team building activities in the gym, listen to piano recitals in the music room or enjoy the jazz band while eating a chicken dinner.  Have fun playing math games with your children or using the IPads.  Come and test your science skills by making a top and seeing how long your top can spin, exploring magnetic force, investigating how far you can fly a plane or making a twirly bird.  Don't forget to check out the Book Fair in the Media Center, view the projects and software programs your child has been working on in the computer labs and visit the 5th grade Science Fair in the Viking Room.  Remember to stop by the Discovery Lab for seed planting and Rm 201 to help make fleece blankets for a homeless shelter.  There will be great displays of student work throughout the building, so join in the fun as we celebrate our students' learning!

The Money Show - 4th & 5th grade FAB Performance

Money might not make the world go around - but it's good to know how to make it and how to manage it! Chicago's Cinema Academy will present "The Money Show" on Thursday, April 18th to our 4th & 5th graders. This fun and fast paced show uses an energetic cast of three to cover the history and theories of money and economies.

The show opens with Aesop's story of the silly Grasshopper and the industrious Ant, then stops and tries to change the end of the story by teaching the Grasshopper about the ways of personal finance. From there, we're off to the races, with the establishment of the principles of supply and demand, the collection of "assets" versus the collection of "things", the principles of Risk and Reward, what "stock markets" are, and how everyone can use the funds they have available to make themselves into sturdy financial "ants" rather than hapless "grasshoppers."

Fifth Graders Looking Back and Forward

Our Burleigh fifth graders will be traveling back in time on Friday, April 12th to participate in Colonial Day.  Students will dress in appropriate clothing of the era, play colonial games, create crafts using tools from the 1700's and try out some tasty treats from bygone days.

Fast forward to 2013, and on Monday, April 15th and Tuesday, April 16th our fifth graders will be going to shadow middle school students at Pilgrim Park.  Students will take tours and try out the lunch line at PPMS in preparation for their advancement to 6th grade.

Compare & Contrast

Burleigh's second graders will be going to the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts on Tuesday, March 19th to view the play Velveteen Rabbit.  Students have been reading the book in class and after viewing the play they will write a critical review comparing the book to the play.

Mad Science is Coming to Second Grade

On Monday, March 25, Mad Science will come into each second grade classroom and present the workshop Fundamental Forces.  This workshop teaches force, motion and energy.  Children will explore their own forces of gravity, see what happens to objects when different forces are applied; this helps to illustrate things like gravity, racetrack, centrifugal and centripetal force.  Students will experiment with gyroscopes and loops.  This in-school offering ties into the second grade FOSS science curriculum of Balance and Motion.
