History of the National Honor Society
The National Honor Society is an academic organization developed to honor students who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, leadership, character, and service. This organization was created in 1921 by Dr. Edward Rynearson, the principal at Fifth Avenue High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The organization then grew from the originated Alpha Chapter at Fifth Avenue High School to more then 1,000 chapters by 1930. NHS then became one of the nation's leading educational groups. Four main purposes or goals were guided thru the chapters of NHS: "To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools." In 1929, the NASSP decided to bring this organization to middle school/junior high school levels. A new organization then was created called the National Junior Honor Society.
