FAQ (frequently asked questions)

FAQ - "How should my child be holding their pencil?"

Below is a picture of a child using an effecient "tripod" grasp.  When using a tripod grasp or grip, the child should be moving their fingers with the writing utensil and not their whole hand or arm.

Tripod Grasp (efficient) - Even better grasp would be to have slight curve in index finger so just tip of finger touches marker and finger tip does not bend back.

 Quadropod Grasp (efficient)

When using an ineffecient grasp (as pictured below) the child tends to use the whole hand or even whole arm all the way up to the shoulder (which is harder, they become tired, don't enjoy writing, don't practice writing, and a downward spiral begins).

 Palmer-Supinate Grasp (inefficient)

 Digital-Pronate Grasp (inefficient)
