Policy 9413 - Policy and Legislative Committee
The committee shall consist of three members of the Board of Education and shall review and present to the Board recommendations pertaining to Board policy and legislative issues. The duties of the Committee regarding Board policy shall be:
1. To review and recommend revision or reconfirmation of existing
policy for the Board every three years or as directed by the Board.
2. At the direction of the Board or in response to mandates or
District needs, to review, write, and recommend any new policy
requested by the Board, the Administration or the public.
3. At the direction of the Board, to review and present recommen-
dations to the Board for any policy about which there is a
question of interpretation.
4. To review practice statements which accompany policies to
ascertain conformance with Board policy.
5. To consider any other policy matters as determined by the
committee or assigned by the Board.
The duties of the Committee regarding legislative issues shall be:
6. To receive legislative information
a. Receive and review proposed state and federal legislation
as well as DPI rules pertaining to public education.
b. Keep the Board informed of all legislative matters as they
relate to the District and other school districts.
c. Review proposed legislation and its impact on the District
and, when appropriate, draft positions on legislation to pro-
pose to the Board.
d. Review and evaluate Wisconsin Association of School
Boards (WASB) and National School Boards Association
(NSBA) resolutions and develop positions on each for
recommendation to the Board.
e. Maintain a file of legislative material for the Board.
7. To meet regarding legislative issues
a. Meet with area legislators on proposed legislation which
the Board feels appropriate.
b. Arrange periodic legislative forums with District legislators
and others dealing with legislation of concern to the District
and other area school districts.
c. Work closely with City of Brookfield and Village of Elm
Grove liaisons as well as parent legislative representatives
or committees as appropriate.
8. To develop legislative positions
a. Prepare resolutions or positions for Board action on
legislative matters and communicate those positions to
appropriate legislators, agencies, the public, and the media.
9. To respond to legislative initiatives
a. At the direction of the Board, present testimony on behalf
of the Board identifying District legislative positions or interests.
b. With Board approval, represent the District at regional, state,
or national legislative meetings.
10. To complete annual committee goals as assigned by the Board.
11. To consider any other matters pertaining to legislative issues, as
determined by the committee or assigned by the Board.
