Policy 6177.1 - Use of the Internet

The District shall provide kindergarten through twelfth grade students with access to filtered sites on global networks (i.e., Internet). Access to the Internet is to be used as a tool to further educational purposes as an integral part of the curriculum under adult supervision.

Students shall be provided appropriate instruction to develop the skills necessary to access, analyze, and evaluate information obtained through the Internet. Students are expected to use the Internet only for intended educational purposes and in accordance with Elmbrook Internet rules and guidelines.

If a parent/guardian chooses to deny access to the Internet for his/her child, an Internet Opt-Out form may be obtained at the school office and must be completed yearly and returned to the school office. Students whose parents/guardians do not permit Internet access shall be provided access to alternative educational materials.

Practice Statement 6177.1 – Use of the Internet

Students are expected to use the Internet only for intended educational purposes and in accordance with Elmbrook Internet rules and guidelines.

Internet Rules and Guidelines

a.  Students shall use the Internet only for educational purposes.
b.  Students shall be instructed about the risks and dangers of
     publishing personal information online.
c.  Students shall not access, communicate, display, download, or
     send messages, pictures or any other material that is offensive,
     objectionable, inappropriate or unlawful.
d.  Students shall not use lewd, obscene or vulgar language nor will
     they be allowed to harass or threaten others through the Internet
     or other District computerized communications systems.
e.  Students shall not use another's network ID and/or password and
     may be in violation of Wisconsin State Law 943.70 for use of
     another's identity.
f.   Students shall not access another's data folders, or use another's
     data files.
g.  Students shall not play multi user dimension or other network
     intensive games or intentionally waste District resources.
h.  Students shall not use the Internet for commercial purposes.

Violations of the published Internet rules and regulations, as determined by a member of the school administration and/or staff, may result in temporary or permanent loss of Internet access for a student. Violations may result in other disciplinary and legal action, as well (see State Acts and Statutes referenced below). Furthermore, the District is not responsible and will not be liable for any damage, harm, or injury caused by individuals who violate the Internet Usage Contract.

The District shall retain ownership and control of its computers, hardware, networks, and software at all times. To maintain system integrity and ensure that users are using the system responsibly, all electronic data is subject to being monitored by administrators and/or staff. District administrators and/or staff may review student data files or communications without student permission.
