Homework Assignments:
Homework Expectations: Homework is considered to be independent practice of concepts and skills taught. Students should be able to complete assignments within a reasonable amount of time (approximately 15-20 minutes) and without a lot of parental assistance. If students cannot complete homework assignments within a reasonable amount of time and without a lot of assistance, parents should note this on the assignment and have students return it to me the next school day.
Reading: Fourth grade students are expected to read a minimum of 400 minutes a month at home. "Home Reading Minutes Recording Sheets" are sent home at the beginning of each month. They are to be returned at the end of each month. Reading goals are to be set with parent assistance and each sheet should be signed by a parent. Students with goals near 400 minutes, should try each motn to increase their goal appropriately.
Math: In addition to daily math assignments, students are expected to engage in daily practice of basic math facts through 10 in multiplication and division for no more than 10 minutes a day. It is a District expectation that multiplication and division facts will be mastered with 90% accuracy by the end of 4th grade. Math facts practice ideas were sent home at Parent Information Night in September and again at Parent Conference sin November.
Additional Daily Assignments: Homework is assigned daily, Monday through Thursday in 4th Grade. 4th grade students should expect to have a daily math assignment and a weekly spelling assignment.
After spelling tests and spelling sentence dictation tests, students will take home "Words to Learn" sheets. These spelling words are reoccuring throughout the year and are expected to be mastered. Lists of 4th grade "No Excuse Words" (previously learned words) and new words to be mastered in 4th Grade were sent home at Parent Information Night (PIN) in September and again at the first Parent-Teacher Conference in November.
Occassionally, social studies project work will be sent home for completion and social studies spirals will be sent home for parents to check note-taking progress and to assist with studying for unit tests.
