TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION:

9th grade class officer and class council elections are fast approaching (see attached document: 9th grade class council election time line):

  • Discuss the difference between student council and class council.
  • After class officers are elected, homerooms will select 2 homeroom representatives to make up freshmen class council; 1 will be the representative and 1 will serve as an alternate.  More information to follow when the time comes.

ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK:

"Getting to Know You" Speeches

Objective:  To get to know everyone in the homeroom better as a person

Materials needed:  Pencil, paper, and candy (optional: to reward speech givers)

Procedure:  For 5–7 minutes, the homeroom quietly tries to develop creative and interesting questions to interview such as: "If you could be any kind of animal, what would you be?" or "If you could be left on a desert island with any book, what book would it be and why?"  Everyone (students, teacher, mentors) breaks into pairs so that they can interview one another.  For another brief period of time, the pairs interview each other.  Then, each pair goes up in front of the class to present their interview in the form of an improvised speech.

Helpful Hints:  Mentors and teachers should make sure that everyone cooperates during the speeches, and should help generate interview questions (see sample questions in attached document: Getting To Know You Interview).

REMINDERS:

  • Get to know every 9th grader in your homeroom by name.
  • Work with the homeroom teacher to set up a weekly routine (study days, team-building days, and game days).
  • 9th graders will probably have a lot of questions, some that they are afraid to ask, get them talking (see attached document: Frequently Asked Questions).
  • Both 9th graders and mentors are to be in attendance in homeroom every day (Monday-Wednesday and Fridays, homeroom is not held on Thursdays).
