2013 6th Grade Lung Health Walk/Run a Success!!!

The seventh annual "3K Walk/Run for Kids' Lung Health" at PPMS, which was co-sponsored by the Chest Foundation, American College of Chest Physicians and Pilgrim Park Middle School, was a huge success! We had almost perfect weather, no snow, no rain, and an enthusiastic group of more than 290 participants.
Sixth grade students received a presentation on lung health and the harmful effects of tobacco followed by a Walk/Run. Each student received a red "Love Your Lungs" wrist band as a reward for their participation and a reminder of the importance of lung health, and a booklet "Tips for Teens on Tobacco".
This event was made possible by the help and support of many people. I would like to offer my sincere thanks and appreciation to all who were involved in this event, including but not limited to:

-The Chest Foundation and American College of Chest Physicians for co-sponsoring this event and providing the "Love Your Lungs" wrist bands.
-The PPMS administration, Mr. Mike Sereno and Mr. Mark Peperkorn along with all the 6th grade teachers for their help in organizing and supervising and supporting this event.
-Mrs. Carol Kern, and the office staff for their help in many areas before, during and after the W/R, including collecting all the participation forms from students for the " Love Your Lungs" design contest"!
-The custodial staff for Hanging the W/R banner, preparing the gym ready, and aiding in set-up and clean-up.
-Mrs. Ellen Linnihan and her student, Abbie Taylor for the wonderful and informative presentation.
-The American Lung Association of Wisconsin for providing the pig lungs.
-The Brookfield Police Department and Officer Carol for providing the brochures on "Tips for Teens on Tobacco"
None of this could have been accomplished without your help and support!

Thank You All!

Panther Students Celebrate Success / Set Goals for Quarter 2!!!

As part of our continued efforts to provide students, parents, staff, and community members with a safe and respectful atmosphere at Pilgrim Park Middle School, we work diligently to regularly recognize students for meeting our expectations.  We try to do this on a daily basis by providing students with RISE cards when we catch them exhibiting the qualities of Respect, Integrity, Strive, or Excellence.  Students receiving RISE cards can submit them to the main office to participate in a weekly prize drawing.  We also try to recognize students’ consistent efforts through our Student of the Month program.

Finally, we ask students to set long-term, attainable goals, and we celebrate when they meet those goals.   For both quarter 1 and quarter 2, Mr. Sereno and Mr. Peperkorn challenged all students to set and meet goals in three areas:

1.       Show respect and responsibility by getting to class on time (no more than 2 tardies during the quarter).

2.       Exhibit integrity by meeting school expectations for behavior (refrain from receiving any office disciplinary referrals during the quarter).

3.       Demonstrate effort and excellence by achieving grades of ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ in all courses during the  quarter.

Students who met the goals outlined above celebrated on Friday in their STP rooms with games and ice cream.  Students meeting their goal for 2nd quarter will be rewarded by participating in a “Minute to Win It” assembly on February 1st.  Students who fall short of their goal will have a quiet study time during the incentive period, and they are encouraged and supported in obtaining a similar goal during the subsequent quarter.
