Happy May, Tonawanda Families!

We started the month with a wonderful teacher appreciation week.  Thank you for all the ways that you show support and appreciation for Tonawanda's awesome teaching staff.  We are all so lucky to have them!  One of the week's highlights for me was attending Elmbrook's Most Influential Teacher dinner.  Former Tonawanda student, Collin Steen honored our very own Bonnie Sullivan with a very touching speech.  At Tonawanda, we truly love our students and Bonnie is a stellar example of this!!

In addition to teacher appreciation week, we recently celebrated Administrative Assistant Day and Food & Nutrition Employee week.  And Mr. Johnson was touched when he was featured in Mr. Schimpf's class newspaper, the Tonawanda Times.  KUDOS to all Tonawanda staff - they are second to none!!

Congrats to our Tonawanda students for completing the Pacer Assessment!   All students 1st-5th grade completed the Pacer Assessment.  3rd-5th grade students set goals and tried to improve their scores from the fall.  If you aren't familiar with the Pacer assessment, it is a muti-stage cardiovascular endurance assessment.  Every nine laps, the time gets shorter for the students to complete the lap.  The students did very well with this assessment, and I am proud of their hard work!  The top boy and girl students for 3rd-5th grade are featured in the pictures!

Our students enjoyed an incredible High Interest Day last Friday!  It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our monthly theme focus, What I am is SMART!  We began our afternoon with an assembly that highlighted the many strengths of our presenters:  musical, kinesthetic, spatial, interpersonal, intrapersonal, linguistic, and natural!  It’s not about how smart you are, but HOW you are smart!!

Here are just a few moments of the afternoon, captured by photographer extraordinaire Sandy Schwarz.

Construction, jewelry making, yoga, sign language, greeting card design, gymnastics, taekwondo, gardening, karate - a sampling of the stations we enjoyed!

An enormous thank you to all of our presenters as well as this year’s planning team: Karen Sopik, Dallas Kennedy, Stephanie Hillmann, Ann Marie Hyndiuk, Amy Zosel, Manal Rizek, Julienne Thomas.  AWESOME WORK!

Tonawanda students just finished a striking unit using volleyball skills.  Our 1-2 grade students worked on striking a beach ball to a partner, the forearm pass, and the underhand serve.  Our 3rd graders practiced the forearm pass and serving, and our 4-5 graders practiced skills and participated in a volleyball game.  We had tons of fun!

We’ll have beautiful May flowers this year, won’t we?!  While it’s not what they would choose, our students have done a great job with all of the indoor recess we’ve had lately – please congratulate them!

Parents, your involvement in your child’s educational process is invaluable.  I extend a BIG thank you to all of you who completed the recent district satisfaction survey.  Information from this survey is currently being used, along with a variety of other district data, to guide Elmbrook’s strategic planning process.  In response to questions about our greatest opportunities for improvement, there were themes that emerged strongly across parent, staff and alumni groups:

  • Meet each student’s individual needs
  • Inspire students to take ownership over their own learning
  • Maintain/reduce current class sizes
  • Offer innovative programming to meet the diverse needs of our students

I’d like to share another opportunity for input with you.  A Principal in a nearby district is completing a study about parent involvement that will help elementary schools around the state of Wisconsin maximize parent contributions to the academic, social, and emotional growth of children on a yearly basis. Your honest feedback will help educators better meet the needs of parents as active participants in and outside of the school setting.  It is completely confidential and will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.  It will be open through May 3.  Following data collection, he has offered to visit our PTO to discuss Elmbrook’s results.  Here is the link:

Thank you!
