Alumni Spotlight: David Luy

David LuyBrookfield East Class of 2010

David Luy is a Spartan graduate who coaches Girls Track at his alma mater and is working towards his dream of running in the Olympic Marathon Trials.

David's journey through Elmbrook took him from Dixon Elementary to Pilgrim Park, ending at Brookfield East. "My parents moved to Brookfield specifically for the quality of education in the area," he stated. "The level of passion that teachers had for their work and their dedication to student success often made them life mentors for me." During his years in Elmbrook, David was active in Boy Scouts, cross country, track, and soccer.

Luy highlighted Track Coach Randy Bucheger and Social Studies teacher and Cross Country Coach, Jeffrey Petersen, as two educators that made a monumental impact on his life. "Coach Petersen helped me to gain a perspective of life outside of school following graduation and Coach Bucheger was a second father to our core team of guys," reflected Luy. "They've both served as profound mentors in my life."

Following graduation from East in 2010, Luy attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison to pursue business and real estate, putting his love of math and data into action. In his Junior year, David decided to challenge himself athletically and he signed up to compete in the Ironman WI triathlon after volunteering at a run aid station in the 2012 race. "The time management required to balance training with my studies, job, and social life helped prepare me well for life," said David. "As I trained, I continued gaining speed and feeling more and more confident in my abilities." After later qualifying for and competing at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, David began actively pursuing his dream of qualifying for the Olympic Marathon Trials in 2020.

During his senior year, David worked as a leasing consultant and transitioned to commercial valuation in the Madison area where he wrote appraisals for diverse property types. He graduated in December 2013 with a Bachelors in Finance and Real Estate, and Urban Land Economics.

Since his graduation, David has experienced more running success, becoming a three -time Eau Claire Marathon Champion, Lakefront Marathon Champion, and Ironman 70.3 Wisconsin Champion as he continues to pursue an Olympic trials qualifying time. "From the moment I could walk, I was a runner, and the support of my family and friends to follow my dream is what motivates me every day."

Today, David works with his father in property management and is a Girls Distance Track Coach at Brookfield East. "I love having an impact on these young athletes," said Luy. In his free time, David has spoken to students in Burleigh's Running Club and at the Badgerland Striders Club.

Elmbrook wishes David luck as he continues to pursue his Olympic dream.
