On Wednesday, October 5, Newbery Honor-winning author Jasmine Warga visited Brookfield Elementary in promotion of her brand new book (released 10/4/22), A Rover’s Story. During her visit, she joined Library Lead Sara Field, Brookfield Elementary Principals, and Dr. Hansen for a ribbon-cutting in honor of the newly renovated library. Warga spoke to 300 highly engaged third through fifth graders at Brookfield Elementary about her journey to become an author, the research and inspiration for her new book, her writing process, stretching your imagination, and finding your place in the world. Jasmine was awarded the Newbery Honor for her book Other Words for Home in 2020.

“Jasmine’s engaging presentation taught students about the importance of creativity, identity, and research,” said Sara Field, Brookfield Elementary Library Lead. “We are so grateful that she came to share her inspiring stories with us!”

Following her presentation, Jasmine answered students’ questions, signed books, and even read the first chapter of her new novel aloud to students in attendance. Warga’s visit marks the first in-person author visit to Elmbrook since 2020. This visit was sponsored by Elmbrook's community partner, Boswell Books. This school year, numerous award-winning authors are scheduled to visit the district as a continuation of our joint initiative to engage students in reading and writing.
