This year, Brookfield East senior Pakou Thao completed her dental assistant technical diploma as a dual enrollment (in high school and college) student at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC)! Thao has been enrolled in the Dental Assistant program at MATC where she has not only excelled in the classroom but also secured a job as a Dental Assistant following her upcoming graduation. Through her Dual Enrollment, she has not only saved time but thousands of dollars.
“Pakou is the perfect example of what hard work, determination, and setting goals can do,” reflected school counselor Jason Lippold. “Pakou’s journey is one of self-advocacy and immense resilience, and I’m so proud of all that she has accomplished. Her participation in the dental assistant program has been nothing short of life-changing.”
While Pakou was initially attracted to the Dental Assistant position because of her desire to help others, her career path expanded after a tour of Marquette University’s Dental School. She is now inspired to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in the field in the hope of one day becoming a Dentist. Pakou’s impressive resume demonstrating both initiative and academic expertise, helped her secure entrance to Marquette and earn scholarships as well.
“The dual enrollment program allows students the opportunity to receive relevant career training in high-demand fields while saving time and cost to a degree,” said Amie Farley, Elmbrook’s Director of College, Career and Life Readiness. “We are so glad Pakou not only took advantage of this opportunity, but took it to new heights.” Thanks to the dual enrollment program, Pakou saved over $3,100 on tuition, supplies, and fees.
