Donald Van Buskirk, longtime Elmbrook administrator and former Wisconsin Hills and Elmbrook Middle School Principal, passed away on the morning of Saturday, November 15 at the age of 90 - shortly after celebrating his birthday and his 64th wedding anniversary.

Don began his Elmbrook career as an English teacher and school newspaper advisor at Brookfield Central before moving into administration, where he served the district for more than 25 years. In 1970, he became the first Assistant Principal of the newly opened Wisconsin Hills Junior High, a role he held for nearly a decade before stepping into the principal position in 1979.

When Wisconsin Hills closed as a junior high in 1982, Don shifted to the district office, helping Elmbrook navigate enrollment changes, boundary adjustments, facility use, and long-term planning. His leadership during this period reflected the deep trust the district placed in him.

In 1985, Don returned to building leadership as Principal of Elmbrook Middle School (now Pilgrim Park Middle School), where he served until his retirement in 1997. During these years, Wisconsin Hills eventually reopened as an elementary school, while Don continued to guide middle-level programming with steady, student-focused leadership.

Those who worked with Don remember him as a thoughtful, dedicated educator whose impact touched multiple buildings and generations of students. His commitment to Elmbrook was evident in every role he held.

We extend our sympathies to all who knew Don, and to his daughter Margo Blomquist (School Counselor at Wisconsin Hills) who continues his legacy today. Please click here to view his obituary and memorial information.
