Best-selling and award-winning author Loren Long visited Brookfield Elementary on Wednesday, October 2, to speak with over 350 students and staff from Brookfield Elementary School. His visit celebrated the release of his latest children’s book, The Yellow Bus, which explores themes of joy, purpose, and companionship told through the life of a school bus. Long, renowned for his work as both an author and illustrator, has sold millions of copies of his books, including the bestselling Otis series and his illustrations for President Barack Obama’s Of Thee I Sing.

Long’s presentation was attended by several GO Riteway drivers and staff, and he thanked them for their dedicated service to our community through their work in transporting students. During his presentation, Long captivated the audience by discussing his inspirations behind The Yellow Bus and his artistic process. He shared personal stories about how his time writing and illustrating the book, which included constructing models in order to accurately depict his drawings of shadows on aerial landscapes. Following the presentation, he answered questions from students, and signed copies of his books for attendees.

“It was an absolute honor to have Loren Long visit,” said Kay Koepsel-Benning, Elmbrook’s Director of Library Services. “His ability to connect with young readers through his art and words is truly inspiring. Events like this encourage a deeper love of reading and creativity within our students.”

Long’s stop at Brookfield Elementary was made possible through a partnership with local independent bookstore, Boswell Books. Elmbrook’s tradition of hosting renowned authors and illustrators continues to promote increased literacy and storytelling among students.
