The Board of Education participated in a School Start Time work session on January 26, 2026. The purpose was to consider start time options and identify clear next steps. Outcomes from this meeting included:

Requesting administration provide the Board of Education more cost details related to the following:

  1. Implementation of walk zones/parent transportation zones
  2. Impact on Private School start/end times
  3. Two tier versus three tier bussing options
  4. Bus driver employment trends

In addition, the Board expressed support for a few key constraints:

  1. Limited disruption to the current Elementary School start time
  2. Consistent deployment of sleep time research to impacted public and private/parochial schools that receive busing from the District
  3. A cost effective solution, recognizing any dollars invested into a transportation solution will come from other areas of the District budget
  4. A desire to get all school start times closer to or beyond 8am

During its conversation, the Board narrowed the focus to Scenarios 2 and 5b located on slides 16 and 19 in the attached presentation. It is important to note that there could be variations to these scenarios (such as flipping Middle and High school start times in Scenario 2.)

A timeline was also established for next steps:

  1. March/April - Administration reports back findings related to the costs and solutions described above
  2. April/May - Board Discussion and/or action on options
  3. Fall, 2027 - implementation of any potential changes
