AVID in the Middle Schools

Wisconsin Hills Middle School and Pilgrim Park Middle School will be starting the AVID program in the 2019-20 school year. AVID or Advancement Via Individual Determination is a program designed to help prepare students for college and career. Brookfield Central and East High School have been running the program for numerous years.

AVID's cornerstone is the use of core teaching strategies to build skills in Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. These core strategies are used building-wide in content areas. A foundation in these skills helps prepare all students for success in middle school, high school, college, and career. All students 6th through 8th-grade benefit from these core strategies.

In addition to the school-wide component, schools will be adding an AVID elective course. The elective offers instruction to support and prepare students in goal-setting, provides intensive support with a tutorial process and builds strong student/teacher relationships. The elective provides a strong peer group for students to gain academic and behavioral skills, including organization, time management, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving. The AVID elective will begin with 7th grade in 2019-20 and 8th grade will be added in 2020-21.

Criteria are used for a student selection process in which students are invited to apply and interview. An AVID elective student shows great determination for success, is within the academic middle and needs extra support in gaining skills to achieve their full potential. Middle Schools will be initiating the student selection process in March.
