Brookfield Central Senior and Legend Yearbook Editor-in-Chief Mary Ellen Ritter was named the 2019 Wisconsin Journalist of the Year by the National Journalism Education Association (JEA). The association awarded her this honor on behalf of her “excellence in leadership, writing voice, and design” based on a submitted portfolio of her works. The honor comes with an award of $400 from the Kettle Moraine Press Association (KEMPA) and Northeastern Wisconsin Scholastic Press Association and qualifies her, as a state winner, for the national JEA Journalist of the Year contest with a chance to win a $3,000 scholarship.
“Mary Ellen is one of the most versatile journalists I have had the opportunity to advise,” said Brookfield Central Yearbook advisor Tom Juran. “What sets her apart is her ability to tell a story in a variety of media forms; print, design, or social. She can learn, easily adapt and sometimes re-learn when she needs to tell her story to a different audience.”
Ritter’s work on the BC Legend Yearbook was previously recognized by KEMPA with awards in numerous yearbook categories. Following graduation, Ritter plans to attend either the University of Missouri or the University of Minnesota to study journalism and graphic design. Congratulations to Mary Ellen on this prestigious achievement.
