On January 20th and 21st, the Brookfield East Debate Team who won big at the Wisconsin State Debate Tournament for their second year in a row. Junior Namitha Alexander retained the crown of Lincoln-Douglas (LD) state champion, winning in the finals for a second year in a row and continuing on to the National Catholic Forensics League's Grand National Tournament in Washington, DC in May. This marks the team's seventh time in the last nine years that the team has had a state champion.
Great team performances were also given by: Rafael Li (semifinalist, LD); Arjun Shreekumar, Shloka Nambiar (quarterfinalists, LD); Evan Clark, Simran Khunger (octofinalists, LD); and Bera Demirbilek and Vivek Srivastava (octofinalists, Public Forum), who have also qualified to compete in the National Tournament.
Additional state qualifiers included Langston Ford (LD), Xander Ge (LD), Tanay Gummadi (PF),Billy Huang (PF) Katrina Li (LD), and Navya Tarikere (LD).
The state tournament was on the heels of the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) qualifier where Namitha Alexander, Ananth Bhat, and Billy Huang all earned a spot at the NSDA National Tournament in Florida this coming June. The team was also awarded the Debate Sweepstakes Award for the Southern Wisconsin NSDA District.
"I inherited a great program from former head coach Sexton," reflected Head Coach Justin Flynn. "These are such great kids and it's been so satisfying to be able to continue the success of the Brookfield East Debate program."
