Brookfield East Senior Nikhita Santebennur was awarded the 2018 Congressional Award Gold Medal for the state of Wisconsin. Nikhita's accomplishment was celebrated at a ceremony on Capitol Hill on June 21 where she met Senators Tammy Baldwin and Ron Johnson.
Beginning in 1979, the Congressional Award program recognizes young americans who challenge themselves to set and achieve personal goals in the areas of volunteerism and public service, personal development, physical fitness, and expedition / exploration. This year a total of 442 medalists were named for the award from around the United States.
Nikhita is also a member of the inaugural class of the Congressional Award's STEM Stars initiative, which celebrated students that engaged in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics-related work to reach their goals in the program.
