L to R: Liani Taylor, Kate Moore with studentBest-selling authors Laini Taylor and Kate Moore visited Brookfield East and Brookfield Central this week to speak with students, staff, and community members.

On Tuesday, October 9, author Laini Taylor visited Brookfield East High School. Taylor spoke to students from both high schools about her stories, her creative process of world-building and character development, and tips to overcoming writer's block. She showed fan art inspired by her novels, answered student and staff questions, and signed books following her presentation.  Taylor has previously received the National Book Award Finalist for her novel Lips Touch: Three Times, and the Michael L. Printz Honor for her novel Strange The Dreamer this year. Her visit was in promotion of her latest book, Muse of Nightmares.

On Thursday, October 11, author Kate Moore visited Brookfield Central High School to speak to students and community members in promotion of her new non-fiction book The Radium Girls. Her book tells the story of women in hazardous radium factories during World War I and how their courage led to life-changing regulations that saved thousands of lives. Moore talked with students about her researching process and motivation to tell the story of the heroic women to bring their voices back to life. Her message resonated with students and she ended her presentation with questions from the audience, and signing copies of her book.

The Radium Girls has received accolades as a recent New York Times Best-seller and the winner of GoodReads' Choice Award for Best History & Biography. The Brookfield Central Drama Department will be performing a one-act play February 14-16 based on the lives of the women in Moore's book. Tickets for the play are available here.

These author visits were sponsored by Elmbrook's community partner, Boswell Books. This school year, numerous award-winning authors are scheduled to visit the district as a continuation of our joint-initiative to engage students in reading and writing.
