On Tuesday, September 1, a lawsuit filed by Brookfield citizen, Cheri Mastel, against Elmbrook Schools claiming the District had violated open records laws was dismissed by the Waukesha County Circuit Court in its entirety after the Court ruled in Elmbrook's favor.
"We take our responsibility to comply with open records laws and operate transparently with our community very seriously," said Dr. Mark Hansen, Superintendent. "In addition to posting all Board and Committee documents through a board document management system for the past eight years, we have consistently posted our school board meetings on our website. We have also broadcasted our board and committee meetings via YouTube throughout the pandemic. This lawsuit consumed valuable District time and resources as important preparations were being made for an unprecedented school year, but we are pleased with the court decision that validates our approach to public transparency and accountability."
During the Hearing of Ms. Mastel's Petition for Writ of Mandamus, the Court agreed with each of the District's arguments and found that the District acted at all times in good faith and in compliance with Section 19.31, et seq. The District was represented by Joel Aziere from Buelow Vetter.
