On January 9, Elmbrook Schools hosted a sold-out FACEBrook intergenerational, inter-district book club discussion at the Brookfield Public Library in partnership with Elmbrook Parent Network and Nicolet, Greenfield, and Glendale - River Hills districts. The discussion centered around diversity with a focus on Trevor Noah's Born a Crime and Meg Belviso and Pam Pollack's Who Was Nelson Mandela?. At the event, Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District's Director of Elementary Education, Dr. Rainey Briggs, shared his story and a list of strategies to reduce implicit bias.

"It's incredible to see so many people from all different ages come together to learn about such an impactful topic," said Kay Benning, Director of Library Services for Elmbrook Schools. "We thank Dr. Briggs and all who attended for making this event such a success."

At the event Nathan Knuth, Wisconsin Hills Art Teacher, worked with book club attendees on a diversity-themed mural. The mural is slated for installation at a District school or public library. The books for the event were provided through a grant from Teaching Tolerance. The next book club will take place on April 2 and focus on Sonia Nazario's Enrique's Journey, click here for more information and to RSVP.
