Learn more about what your Family Wellness Center offers through our monthly "Ask Kalee" series. Kalmette Cambray, DNP is experienced in primary care, internal medicine, pediatrics, urgent care and emergency medicine. See her column related to medications through the clinic for March 2018.

Dear Kalee,

I understand that the Family Wellness Center has some commonly prescribed medications available at no cost or charged to me at the cost that the clinic pays. I also understand that you can prescribe other medications as needed for purchase through an outside pharmacy. I like the convenience of these options. Can you help me understand how meds are administered at the Wellness Center?

If you prescribe me a medication that is available at the clinic to manage my chronic illness, how do monthly refills work? Would I receive up to three months at the clinic as I set a follow-up appointment with you? Or, would I receive a one-month supply and a written prescription to take to an outside pharmacy for refills?

Signed, Interested in Making the Wellness Center my Primary Care

Dear Interested,

Thank you for considering our wellness center as your means of primary healthcare. We are happy to welcome you and give you a tour of the facility, and introduce you to the staff. To answer your medication questions, a few common medications that are prescribed and available at the clinic are antibiotics, blood pressure medications, antidepressants, cholesterol medications, diabetes medications, and inhalers. Some over the counter medications are available in generic form also: Flonase, Zyrtec, Prilosec. These vary from patient to patient, and may not be the right choice for everyone, but are considered with each visit if needed. All medications are also subject to change, please call the clinic to help answer any of your medication questions. We can be reached at (262) 214-1101.

Medications can be administered at the time of the visit and the cost added to your visit cost. We are not a pharmacy, but rather a dispensary. This means that we can dispense medications related to your visit, but are not able to provide refills. We may be able to dispense medication again if associated with another clinic visit. Refills vary from patient to patient. No one is on the same schedule. Some medications require close monitoring, where others are stable can be provided annually. Some individuals' health needs require more frequent visits than others. This can be arranged through a clinic appointment and can be discussed individually. There are variety of methods to obtain medications, such as via clinic visits if the medication is available at our clinic, through local pharmacies, or via mail order.

I hope this helps answer some questions regarding your medications.

Inspiring Healthy Change,
