Tonawanda Elementary School placed 2nd in the 2021-2022 WEMTA State Battle of the Books competition! The team was composed of students Zuri Alvira, Susie Salinas, Julia McWey, Addison Dworak, and Alexandra Habich (pictured below). The girls took the silver in the elementary division which includes students from across the state in grades 4 through 6 with an average of 230 schools competing each year.

"This is really a celebration for all of the Tonawanda students who participated this year,” reflected Coach & Tonawanda Reading Specialist Molly Hopp. “They all worked very hard and helped raise the bar on the level of competition." This year, a total of 21 teams (each team made of 4-5 students) competed in the Tonawanda Battle of the Books competition. Students participate in multiple practice sessions before the Tonawanda battles begin.

The statewide WEMTA Battle of the Books program is designed to promote a love of reading and encourages students to read a variety of books and remember information about the plots, characters, and settings of the books. There are twenty books on the Battle of the Books list and students work as a team to earn points in the competition by answering questions correctly.

Congratulations to the award-winning team and all students who participated in the Battle of the Books competition this year!
